Kid's Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
Confidence, Fitness and Skills for Life
Help your child become fitter, more confident and more resilient through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at The Den Fight Centre.
Our children’s BJJ programme combines expert martial arts coaching with structured, age-appropriate classes where children can learn, make friends and enjoy being active.
Classes are available for children and teenagers from 4 to 15 years old, with separate groups for Tiny Champions, Juniors and Teens.
No previous martial arts experience is needed.
More Than Just a Martial Art
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—commonly known as BJJ—is a grappling-based martial art that teaches children how to control an opponent using technique, movement and leverage.
There are no punches or kicks in BJJ. Students learn takedowns, escapes, control positions and submissions in a supervised and controlled environment.
While children are having fun and learning exciting new skills, BJJ can also help them develop:
- Confidence and self-belief
- Discipline and respect
- Fitness, balance and coordination
- Focus and problem-solving skills
- Resilience when facing challenges
- Practical self-defence awareness
- Teamwork and positive friendships
Every child progresses at their own pace. They do not need to be naturally athletic, confident or experienced before joining.
Our Children’s BJJ Classes
Tiny Champions
Ages 4–6
Our Tiny Champions classes introduce younger children to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through movement, simple techniques, games and structured activities.
The sessions are designed to keep children engaged while helping them learn how to listen, follow instructions, work with a partner and become more confident around others.
Children will improve their balance, coordination and body awareness while beginning to understand the values of discipline, respect and teamwork.
Most importantly, the classes are energetic, positive and fun.
Class times:
Tuesday: 4:00–4:45pm
Thursday: 4:00–4:45pm
Juniors Class
Ages 7–10
Our Juniors BJJ classes give children the opportunity to learn genuine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a friendly but structured environment.
Students learn takedowns, escapes, control positions and submissions while developing their fitness, concentration and confidence.
We encourage children to challenge themselves, support their teammates and continue trying when something feels difficult. These lessons can benefit them both on and off the mats.
Classes include technical instruction, partner drills, positional training and carefully supervised sparring appropriate to each child’s age and experience.
Children can train recreationally, work through the BJJ grading system or begin preparing for competitions when they are ready.
Class times:
Tuesday: 5:00–6:00pm
Thursday: 5:00–6:00pm
Friday: 5:00–6:00pm
Teens Class
Ages 11–15
Our Teens BJJ class offers more advanced and physically challenging training while remaining suitable for complete beginners.
Teenagers learn effective grappling, takedowns, escapes, control and submissions while improving their strength, fitness and confidence.
BJJ gives teenagers a positive place to challenge themselves, release stress and become part of a supportive team. It also teaches them to remain calm under pressure, solve problems and respond constructively when things do not go their way.
Students can train simply for enjoyment and fitness or follow a structured pathway towards gradings and BJJ competition.
Our coaches make sure new students are introduced to training safely and are partnered with suitable teammates.
Class times:
Tuesday: 6:00–7:00pm
Thursday: 6:00–7:00pm
Friday: 6:00–7:00pm
A Friendly Gym Where Every Child Is Welcome
Starting a martial art can feel intimidating—for children and parents.
At The Den, new students are welcomed into the team and supported from their first session. Nobody is expected to arrive already fit, confident or familiar with martial arts.
Our experienced coaches explain techniques clearly, place children with suitable training partners and make sure every student feels included.
We take martial arts seriously, but we also want children to enjoy coming to class, build friendships and look forward to training each week.
Can My Child Compete?
Competition is completely optional.
Many children train BJJ simply because they enjoy learning, getting fitter and spending time with their teammates.
For those who want an additional challenge, The Den has an experienced competition team and can help students prepare for suitable Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu events.
Whether your child wants to compete or simply become a little more confident each week, they will be treated as an important part of the team.
What Does My Child Need for Their First Class?
For their free taster session, they can wear comfortable sports clothing such as:
- A T-shirt
- Shorts or jogging bottoms
- A bottle of water
BJJ is practised barefoot. Please avoid clothing with zips, buttons or anything that could catch during training.
There is no need to purchase a BJJ Gi before attending the first session.
