GB Technique: Trip takedowns from standup

This week on GB Technique, we are going to look at some standing trips to get the match to the mat effectively.

Have you checked out the GB Online Instagram account?
The sports of judo and wrestling have a wide variety of takedowns with significantly different mechanisms for executing the takedown. For example, a double leg is vastly different than a hip throw which is in turn, works very differently than a leg trip.
While all of these techniques have their effective uses, some types of takedowns are more suited to the specific ruleset of a particular sport.
For BJJ – where giving the back is a major strategic error compared to wrestling or judo, trip takedown variations don’t expose your back to your opponent and can be used in combinations to take down the biggest opponents.
Let’s take a look at some of the best trips for Jiu-Jitsu athletes with Prof. Henrique Machado from his GB2 module on Takedowns
Inside trip / Ouchi Gari
I saw this very trip used several times in a UFC fight this previous weekend. Gi or No-Gi, this is a must-know trip and Prof. Henrique Machado shows how.
Outside Hook or reap trip / Osoto Gari
The Major outside trip is said to be the favorite of GB founder Master Carlos Gracie Jr.
Propping front trip / Hiza Guruma
Perfect in combination with the previous two trips, when the opponent resists your attempt to take them down in the rear direction, you suddenly reverse direction and catch them by surprise with this front trip.
